The future of internet anything is difficult to predict (at best) but it’s even more difficult with online poker because of all the legal controversy surrounding the issue. Citizens of the US may still play online but there are efforts in Washington fighting both against internet poker and for it.
Prohibitions have proven fruitless in the past so I suspect that the biggest change we’ll see in the future of internet poker is an improved legal environment. After that, we’ll probably get more regulation which will lead to greater transparency.

The improved legal environment will probably also lead to more poker sites and greater competition among poker sites for your business. Because of that you’ll probably see better technology, better poker bonuses, promotions and more players overall.
Improved Legal Environment
The United States isn’t the only political battleground for online poker but it’s probably the most prominent. The US makes up the single largest target market for online poker in the world and even just a few years ago, internet poker had no representation in the US. But now, mostly thanks to the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), there are people out there lobbying for the regulation of online poker.
Right now, it’s not necessarily illegal to play internet poker, but it is illegal to provide internet poker in the United States. That’s why every poker site is located somewhere offshore.
With an improved legal environment, we’ll probably see more poker sites and increased regulation. This regulation will probably force poker sites to be more transparent and to set minimum standards of customer service.
Greater Transparency
The most popular poker sites are already pretty transparent in the sense that the operators communicate openly with players and subject themselves to random audits for security and fairness.
In the future we’ll probably see even more transparency because as poker sites compete with one another, they eventually come to realize that poker players put reputation above all other factors when choosing a poker site.
Better Technology
Better technology is a fairly safe guess because as time passes, technology tends to get better. In addition to that, the increased competition between poker sites will probably force better technology to emerge.
It’s hard to say how technology will improve but it will likely involve things like better graphics, improved animations, tighter security and added features. Mobile phone gaming is a distinct possibility but that market has many challenges facing it. Multi-tabling, for instance, is difficult to imagine on a mobile phone.
More Poker Players
As the legal environment improves and people come to realize online poker is actually safer than live poker, we’ll see more poker players enter the scene. These players will start out as fresh meat for the experienced players but eventually these new poker players will improve and the general skill level among online poker players will rise.
There will still be tons of soft spots, however, so I wouldn’t worry about the online poker world becoming a shark-fest. Most people don’t take the time to learn anything other than a very basic set of poker strategy principles.
Better Bonuses and Promotions
Eventually I think we’ll see better promotions and bonuses from poker rooms in an effort to earn your business. The improved legal landscape, increased number of poker rooms and additional players entering the market will cause poker sites to compete fiercely with one another.
If major land-based casinos get in on the internet action, it would be interesting to see what kind of promotions they offer. It’s easy to imagine them offering perks such as free air travel to their live locations, free hotel rooms and other cool promotions to go along with their online promotions.
Summary
Again, I could be totally wrong about the future of internet poker but this list seems like a pretty solid set of possibilities going forward. We’ve already seen trends such as these in the past so it makes sense that they could continue on into the future.
The biggest factor affecting online poker in the future is the legal landscape. If poker becomes regulated and accepted by the politicians of the world, we’ll see all kinds of positive changes.
The modern-day world of internet poker isn’t too shabby at all, though. Sure the graphics at most poker sites leave something to be desired but simple economics have kept online poker safe for poker players. The most trustworthy and respected poker sites have, for the most part, risen to the top of the food chain.
Whatever changes we see in the future of internet poker, I’m sure they will be for the better. People want to play poker; the demand is out there, so we’ll still be playing poker on the internet for years to come.
